Fateful decisions were made in the late summer of 1856 on the Missouri River near Florence, Nebraska. More than 1,000 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—pioneers bound for the Salt Lake Valley—made the decision that they would “jump off onto the plains“ and start for the Rocky Mountains notwithstanding the lateness of the season. They had more than 1,000 miles to travel before winter snows overtook them.

They did not make it. With more than 300 miles yet to go they were caught unprepared by raging winter storms in the middle of Wyoming, and people began to die.

Brigham Young had been apprised of their plight and with unparalleled urgency and force of will he called for volunteers to effect a daring and dangerous rescue.

This book is the story of that rescue— one of the greatest rescues in American history. History informs us that rescue came too late to save the Donner party, but just in time to save these immigrants. This is gripping history. It is an inspiring and compelling story of sacrifice, love, and faith.
